Selena Gomez and The Weeknd Hit the Met Gala as a Couple

The Weeknd and Selena Gomez at Met Gala 2017

In case you’ve missed it, Selena Gomez has been undergoing a fashion transformation of late. Ever since the singer linked up with The Weeknd, she has taken to a wildly romantic wardrobe to match their whirlwind courtship—from Florence to the Coachella Valley, and all points in between. Last night’s Met Gala2017 red carpet was also a marked departure for Gomez—and the couple’s official red carpet debut. While last year saw her in a tough leather vest and combat boots by Louis Vuitton, this time she went for an unabashedly feminine turn in Coach that evoked summer love, amplified by The Weeknd’s presence at her side.

Lest you forget, Gomez is the brand’s new face—a role that may also involve designing a few pieces. As Gomez told Vogue prior to hitting the carpet hand in hand with her boyfriend, the blush-toned dress was a collaboration with Coach creative director Stuart Vevers that unfolded over the last few months. “He definitely was open to the way I wanted to feel and present myself,” Gomez said. “I wanted the look to be something different than anything I had worn in the past.” The silk chiffon dress featured vintage lace paneling and hand-sewn floral embroidery; prismatic sequins mimicked prints from the Coach 1941 Pre-Fall 2017collection. “The color was different from anything I typically wear,” Gomez added, “and it’s been awhile since I have worn lace.”

“The starting point for this dress was Selena,” explained Vevers, who also accompanied Gomez on the red carpet. “We were inspired by the nostalgic glamour of the 1930s, but wanted it to feel very ‘today’ and evoke a cool feminine ease that felt modern and personalized.” Indeed, when coupled with a few lingerie-inspired details, the prairie embellishment lent Gomez that youthful ease she’s known for. Although she is now rarely seen without her pebbled leather Coach bag in hand, this evening, she swapped her usual carrier in favor of the brand’s tiny Kisslock Frame clutch. The archival-inspired piece boasted a playful cherry print and metallic snakeskin handles. The finishing touch? Embossed on the bottom of the bag was the phrase, “Love yourself first,” a nod to the tattoo inked in Arabic script on the right side of Gomez’s back.

“The minute I met Stuart I knew he understood me and how I view fashion,” Gomez said. “I have absolutely loved collaborating with him and can’t wait for everyone to see the upcoming campaign and piece we worked on together.” If tonight’s look is any indication, the results are sure to be a smash success—young love, in fashionable form.
